Tournament Rules

Rules:

THE DECISION OF THE CONVENER IS FINAL.

Teams:  Teams MUST have at least three people to start a game (maximum of four players).  Each team must have all their players registered in person before the commencement of the tournament in order to be eligible to play for that team.

Coin Toss:  The team that wins that coin toss has the option of first possession.  A coin toss will also determine possession at the beginning of overtime.

OFFICIATING:  ALL GAMES WILL BE SELF-OFFICIATED.  REMEMBER THIS IS A CHARITY EVENT!!

Individual players are encouraged to call their own fouls.  However, an offensive player retains the right to call a foul if they believe they have been fouled.  Should this occur, the offensive team begins with the ball at the top of the key.

On a defensive foul, the offensive team takes possession at the top of the key.

Questions of judgment must be mediated by the two teams involved. A double forfeit will be recorded for any games that cannot be completed due to continued disagreement between the teams.

Game Length: Ten minute games.

Substitutions:  One substitution per game.  Substitutions can only be made during a stoppage in play.   There is unlimited substitution due to injuries.

Checking the ball:  The ball shall be “checked” by the opposing team after each made basket, foul or when the ball goes out of bounds.

The offensive team must “pass the ball in” before a shot is attempted (make one pass before a shot is taken).

Turnover:  Following an offensive turn over, the team taking possession of the ball must bring the ball past the foul line extended before attempting a basket.  This includes a shot that does not touch the rim and is caught by the defensive team.

Possession of the ball:  The possession changes after each basket (this is NOT make it, take it).

Scoring:  Each basket is worth one point.

Jump ball:
On a held ball, the defensive team will take possession of the ball.

Tie:  In the event of a tie, a foul shooting playoff will take place with each team member shooting (three shots) – alternating between teams.  If the tie has not been broken, the teams continue to shoot in a sudden death round – similar to an NHL tiebreaker format.  An extra 2 minutes will be added to the clock in the semi and final rounds.

Ejections:  The convener will make decisions on player and team ejections.  Conduct that could amount to ejection includes, but is not limited to, fighting, taunting, excessive swearing, flagrant fouls with intent to injure.

.

Playoffs:  Top three teams from each division go to the playoffs (top four teams in the recreation division).   One point is awarded for a win.  In the event of a tie between teams in the point standings, "head to head" matchup will be assessed and/or total points for versus against.  No more than 10 points can be achieved by a winning team in a single gaem.  A team winning in foul shooting overtime will be awarded 1 point.
